Finding Nemo is about a clownfish named Nemo who was captured and put into a dentist's fish tank. Marlin, his father, goes on a wild adventure searching for his son in the vast Pacific Ocean, only to stumble upon obstacles and make friends who help guide him towards his son. The movie was first aired on May 30, 2003 and is the second highest G-rated movie of all time (after Toy Story 3). The movie's DVD sold over 40 million copies by 2006. It is the 5th highest grossing animated movie and 27th highest grossing movie. Overall the movie did a very good job with coral reef facts and geography. But how much of the movie is actually accurate?
One important fact that would have changed the whole movie is about the clownfish. Clownfish are born with both reproductive parts and all clownfish are born as males. Female clownfish only occur when an alpha female clownfish dies. Therefore, in the very beginning of the movie when Nemo's mother dies, Marlin should have changed into a female. And after Nemo was born, Nemo would mate with the now female "Marlin." This key idea would have completely changed the entire movie.
Everyone knows and loves the friendly, "surfer dude" sea turtle Crush. Crush stated that he is 150 years old and still young. However this is almost twice as long as the normal life span of a sea turtle, which is around 80 years. The oldest turtles are tortoises, which are land turtles, and the oldest tortoise recorded was 188 years old. So by that standard, Crush is 150 years old and is still old.
Nigel the seagull is all wrong. First, Nigel is a Brown Pelican. However, there are no Brown Pelicans that live in Australia. There are Australian Pelicans, and they look very different than Brown Pelicans. Also, Nigel has nostrils. Pelicans do not have any nostrils.
When Marlin and Dory are swallowed by the whale, you can see the whale's uvula. Whales do not have uvulas. Uvulas are only specific to humans. Also, Marlin and Dory go down his throat and out his blowhole. The whale's anatomy does not show that the digestive system meets up with the respiratory system, or the blowhole. So in reality, Marlin and Dory would have been eaten by the whale.
